The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) is a dynamic inter-governmental organisation aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and sustainable development within the Indian Ocean region through its 22 Member States and 10 Dialogue Partners.
The agenda talks about Maritime Security, which includes elements of international peace and security, sovereignty, security from crimes at sea, security of resources and environmental security. Meanwhile, Maritime Safety is concerned with training (both technical and personnel), transport, construction and equipment related issues, assistance in distress situations etc. In IORA, delegates talk about the blue economy of the Indian Ocean keeping in mind the piracy threats especially off the coast of Somalia.
